How do you lightening your hair with lemon juice?

i wanted to do like highlights but i wanted to do like one strand w.e day i was doing it and i wet it and put the lemon juice in and went outside and nothing happened.. is it supose to lighten over a longer period of time?How do you lightening your hair with lemon juice?
I tried this once and it didn't work too well, and then i smelt like lemons for about a week, but it doesn't matter :)

If you want to try, you're supposed to just squeeze some onto your dry hair and sit out in the sun for a few hours? Then just wash it out as you would normally :) x
